By engaging early with Year 2 pupils, the challenge takes place before they begin to pick their subjects. Therefore, if they take an interest in pursuing a career in construction, they can choose the relevant subjects to do so.
As event organiser, we have been liaising with schools to solicit applications, getting in touch with potential venues for hosting the various heats, and sourcing sponsorship. We will also be on hand to assist with coordinating the heats, as well as the grand final which will take place in January 2020.
We have been hard at work creating a range of materials to engage with all the different audiences involved in the challenge, and there are also plans to create a website which will provide a platform for all students to learn more about the different career paths in construction. This ensures that the students can continue to be inspired and have all the facts they need to embark on a career within the construction industry, even after the challenge has been completed.
“Trades such as joinery, plumbing and welding are vital elements in the construction industry. But this sector is about so much more. Build Your Future aims to educate students on the exciting and inspiring careers they could have, including civil engineering and architecture. We are absolutely thrilled that we’ve been asked to be a part of this wonderful initiative. Our collective goal is to make this an annual event that turns the stereotypes around construction on its head, creating pathways to their future careers.”
