Glenfarclas £511.19s.0d Family Reserve

Glenfarclas approached us to work on the name and packaging for a very special whisky. To mark six generations of the Grant family ownership, totalling 150 years, a short run of whisky was produced to sell to collectors the world over.

We approached the job by visiting the distillery on a number of occasions and delved into their history. When we found the original receipt for the purchase of the distillery, we had what we needed. The price paid on 8th June 1865 was £511.19s.0d and that’s what we named the whisky, “£511.19s.0d Family Reserve”.

The packaging for the box and the bottle label focussed on the distillery itself, the surrounding scenery and the cost of purchase. We augmented this with a printed insert to sit inside the box. One side contains the story of the whisky and the other side, a replication of the receipt with the distillery purchase highlighted.

Mearns & Gill got to know Glenfarclas in the late 1980s and have enjoyed a long association which has included packaging design and visitor centre promotion.

Over the years, we have repackaged their complete range of mainstream products – 10, 12 and 15 year old, plus the 105 Cask Strength. We attended Vinexpo in Bordeaux - at that time the world’s biggest drinks exhibition - to launch the rebranded products.

We have also produced a corporate brochure in several languages for their agents around the world and produced a unique collectors' range, including a series of illustrations by three artists.
