A New Chapter
Passing the baton
In 2013, Mearns & Gill exceeded £3 million in turnover for the first time since the Mitchells era, driven by a mature mix of events, major corporate clients, and longstanding marketing relationships.
The following year, the company took on the National Trust for Scotland President's Ball, helping to raise £517,000 in one night and winning a Scottish Event Award. It was another example of ambition and meticulous planning paying off.
But by 2014–15, Alan was approaching 40 years and knew it was time to step back. Mike Wilson, a longstanding client whose own family business (William Wilson, founded in 1900), came on board. In Alan's words, Mike is "integrity personified", and there was nobody better to take it on.
Mike acquired the company in 2016, marking the start of a new chapter while building on the reputation three generations of the Mearns family had established.
Tania retired in 2021 after 30 years as a senior account manager. In total, the Mearns family contributed over 200 years of combined service: James & Agnes (1936–1966), Graeme (1955–1997), Lesley (1957–1967), Alan (1978–present), and Tania (1990–2021).
