Building a New Conference From the Ground Up
In 2020, SPE Aberdeen and GESGB launched a new, not-for-profit conference for the carbon capture, utilisation and storage industry. At the time, this was a small and fast-changing field.
As a long-term partner of SPE Aberdeen, we were brought on board as the event's PCO, running its first edition online and working alongside a volunteer technical committee to shape a programme from scratch.
That relationship has continued through every edition since. The conference moved to an in-person format at the Chester Hotel, Aberdeen, in 2024, and its name evolved alongside it, from the CCUS Conference to the CO2 Storage Conference; a change made to keep the event focused and relevant to SPE Aberdeen and GESGB's own audiences, whose interest centres on capture and storage rather than the wider utilisation space.
End-to-End Conference Delivery
We manage every stage of the conference on the organising committee's behalf: coordinating the technical committee's abstract calls and scoring, shaping the programme around the industry's evolving priorities, building sponsorship and exhibition packages, running social and email marketing, managing delegate registration, and delivering the event on-site through to post-event reporting.
As a not-for-profit event, the surplus it generates is reinvested by SPE Aberdeen and GESGB to support the next generation of the industry, including bursaries for students and young professionals. Since moving in person, the conference has built steadily on that foundation – growing its delegate numbers, sponsorship and exhibition income, and selling out its delegate places every year at the Chester Hotel. This all equates to an increase in the surplus available to reinvest into different initiatives by both organisations.
Capturing The Industry's Attention
The CO2 Storage Conference has sold out its delegate places for two consecutive years, attracted a record 88 abstracts for its 2026 programme, and continues to grow its reputation as the carbon storage industry's most important annual gathering. Six editions in, the best is still to come.
"Amazing conference, so well organised... Thank you to the Mearns & Gill team on the event organising, it was a perfect two days and every little detail was thought of."
